The film ‘Drishyam’ (2015) starring famous actors like Ajay Devgan, Tabu, Shriya Saran, and Ishita Dutta, and ‘Drishyam 2’ (2022) starring Akshaye Khanna and Saurabh Shukla with these stars two of the best films of Bollywood. This is a great suspense, crime thriller movie which hardly anyone would not have liked. The unique story of both these films surprised the audience. Both these films are remakes of two films of the same title made in Malayalam. Last year in 2023, news started coming that the third and last film of this successful franchise, Drishyam 3, would be released in the year 2024. In such a situation, many questions related to the Drishyam franchise may arise in the minds of fans. Today in this article we will try to know the answers to some such questions. Let’s take a look at some questions related to the Drishyam film series whose answers you may not even know…
Is Drishyam 2’s story related to Drishyam 1?
Yes! The Bollywood film Drishyam 2 (2022), starring Ajay Devgan in the lead and directed by Nishikant Kamat, is the sequel to its first film Drishyam (2015), which takes place seven years after the events of the first story. Both stories are deeply interconnected. The crime thriller suspense story revolving around Vijay Salgaonkar and his family in the first film continues in the second film as well.
What was the reason for making Drishyam 2?
Ajay Devgan starrer Drishyam (2015) was actually a remake of the Malayalam film Drishyam (2013). The director and screenwriter of this Malayalam film is Jeethu Joseph and South star Mohanlal is in the lead role. The story and presentation of Drishyam (2013) was unique and out of the league, due to which people liked it a lot. As a result, the film proved to be a blockbuster and became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of that year. Due to its immense success, the film inspired filmmakers to remake it in other languages and it was remade in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. At the same time, director Jeethu Joseph again decided to make a sequel to his successful film Drishyam keeping Mohanlal at the center and he released Drishyam 2: The Resumption or Drishyam 2 in 2021. Then Bollywood made a remake of this Malayalam film Drishyam 2 with minor changes and Drishyam 2 (2022) was presented before us.
If you ask, why did South Film Industry director Jeethu Joseph decide to make Drishyam 2 after making the Malayalam film Drishyam (2013)? It is also clear that if Drishyam 2 was not made in Malayalam, then Hindi Drishyam 2 could hardly have been made. So the answer is business. Since the film industry is a business, filmmakers always look for opportunities to create hype around a film before its release. The audience was happy with the happy ending of Drishyam, as all the audiences usually want. Everyone felt that Vijay had won and IG Meera Deshmukh had lost. After watching the first film, no one expected that Vijay would face further problems. But the filmmakers knew that if its next part was released, people would go crazy to watch it. After a few years, the filmmaker took advantage of this opportunity to produce another film. As soon as the second film Drishyam 2 was announced, people started thinking is there still something left in this story? And if there is something, what is it? These questions within him drew him to theaters and Drishyam 2 also proved to be a hit.
Do I need to watch Drishyam 1 before 2?
Yes! Drishyam 2 is a sequel to its first film Drishyam and the entire story and characters of the first film Drishyam are related to the second film Drishyam 2. If you watch the second film without seeing the first film (if you haven’t seen both films yet) you will have trouble understanding the characters and the story. Drishyam 2 is a suspense crime thriller film with a complex story and many scenes and dialogues reminiscent of the first film. If you’re looking for an example, imagine watching Baahubali 2 without watching Baahubali.
As another example, let me remind you that after the release of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), a kind of madness was seen among the people regarding it and it was discussed everywhere. Even megastar Amitabh Bachchan came to know about this craze of people. The interesting thing was that he had not seen any MCU film till now. So they also reached the cinema hall to watch Avengers: Infinity War (2018). After watching the film, he tweeted, “T 2803 -T 2003 – Okay brother, don’t mind, watch a picture, ‘AVENGERS’… I couldn’t understand what was happening in the picture!!! 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪😠😠😠”. To prevent this from happening to you, watch the first film and then the second. And wait until the third movie comes out…
Is Drishyam 2 better than Drishyam?
If we have to answer in one line, it can be said that both films have their own place and importance. It would be unfair to both films to compare one film with the other. First, let us talk about Drishyam. Watching this, we the audience slowly delve into the story and get acquainted with the characters one after the other. The plot of the film unfolds before us very smoothly and as the film moves towards the climax, the suspense deepens. It becomes difficult to guess what is going to happen next. Everyone remains glued to their seats till the end of the film and the climax of the film leaves us stunned. Well, there is a reason for this in our society, less educated people are often underestimated, and educated people (especially those with special powers) are considered superior to them. The hero of this film makes the entire police department dance even after a fourth failure.
After watching Drishyam, we knew the characters, story, and unexpected events that happened in it. People went to see the second film with a lot of expectations and anticipations. In such a situation, the second film should have had a funnier plot, a more complex story, and a better climax with many unexpected events than the previous film. Drishyam 2 fulfilled all these expectations of the audience and also surprised people.
In Drishyam 2, Vijay takes many such steps that no one would have even imagined. The master plans made by Vijay are revealed one after the other and the audience as well as IGs Tarun Ahlawat and Meera Deshmukh are left stunned. It becomes difficult for anyone to believe that an illiterate person can think so far ahead. Be it writing a book on his life, getting himself arrested and giving his confession, exploring the local morgue and befriending its security guard, choosing a location for his cinema hall and installing cameras outside, or living without family. Tell me to change the position of the body. As a debut film, Drishyam establishes itself quite well and entertains the audience thoroughly. Whereas the second film Drishyam 2 comes out with a much better plot. From all these aspects, both the films are good in their own places.
Is Drishyam 2 hit or flop?
Certainly, Drishyam 2 has been a hit film. Its budget was approximately ₹70 crore and it made a worldwide business of ₹345 crore. With this, this film became the second highest-grossing Hindi film of the year 2022, which is only surpassed by the film “Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva” which earned about ₹ 430 crore. Not only this, Drishyam 2 has also become the 24th highest-grossing Hindi film of all time, and from these things, you can guess how successful it has been.
What is the story of Drishyam 2 (movie)?
As a flashback, we see that on the night of 3 October 2014, a man named David Braganza sees Vijay leaving a construction site while running away from the police after committing a murder. Meanwhile, seven years later, Vijay is living comfortably with his family. Now he owns a movie theater and also runs a cable company. He wants to make a film and in connection with this, he meets Murad Ali.
On the other hand, Nandini informs her neighbor Jenny (who happens to be an undercover policeman) about Sam’s murder. Jenny has been appointed by Meera Deshmukh’s friend IG Tarun Ahlawat. Just then David bumps into Vijay and remembers that Vijay did something at the local police station. David greedily tells everything to Tarun, Meera, and Mahesh which leads to the discovery of a dead body in the police station. Vijay’s family is called for questioning and they are beaten up. To save his family, Vijay takes the blame for Sam’s murder. He is arrested and put on trial for Sam’s murder.
After learning about Vijay’s arrest, Murad Ali visits Tarun, Meera, and Mahesh, where he reveals that Vijay had prepared a script based on a murder. That script has been published as a novel titled Drishyam and Murad has been named as the author. Vijay’s lawyer claims in the court that the police have used the story of a novel named Drishyam to trap Vijay. On the other hand, the DNA of the skeleton found in the police station does not match Sam’s DNA.
Murad reveals that Vijay was focusing on what would happen in the real world if the police found the body and the hero’s plan failed. After finding out everything, he exhumes a body of Sam’s stature from a local morgue, transforms it into remains, and replaces it with a skeleton from the police station. Vijay was released due to lack of evidence and the investigation was closed.
Is Drishyam 2 worth a watch?
Absolutely! This is a perfect crime thriller movie in which you will get to see many famous actors like Ajay Devgan, Tabu, Akshay Khanna, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta, Mrinal Jadhav, Rajat Kapoor, Saurabh Shukla. The plot of this film is quite unique which is not commonly seen. In the film, secrets are revealed one after the other and you will not be able to take your eyes off the screen while watching the entire film. This is such a powerful film that you can watch it more than once. You may be surprised many times while watching the film for the first time and at every turn you will get a new suspense, after the layers of which are revealed, you too will be stunned.
When you feel that the hero of the film is trapped in the custody of the police, the story will take a new turn there and you will feel as if Vijay has time traveled and has already seen what is going to happen and has predicted it a long time ago. Preparations have been made. In this, you will be shocked to see that a present IG, a retired IG, and the entire police department stand helpless in front of an illiterate person and despite all their efforts, they are unable to do any harm to Vijay (at least not till these two films so far). If for any reason you have not seen Drishyam or Drishyam 2 yet, then you must watch both these films once.
What is Drishyam 2 remake of?
The Bollywood film Drishyam 2 (2022) is a remake of the 2021 Malayalam-language crime thriller film Drishyam 2: The Resumption or Drishyam 2. Drishyam 2: The Resumption is written and directed by Jeethu Joseph and the film stars Mohanlal, Meena, Ansiba Hassan, Esther Anil, and Murali Gopi among others. On the other hand, the Bollywood film Drishyam (2015) is also a remake of the 2013 crime thriller film Drishyam, made in the Malayalam language. The writer and director of this Malayalam Drishyam is also Jeetu Joseph and the film stars Mohanlal, Meena, and Ansiba Haasan in the lead cast. Except for the names of characters and places, time, and minor incidents, the core of both the stories made in Malayalam and Hindi is the same. To put it in simple language, first Drishyam was made in Malayalam in 2013 and in 2015, Drishyam was made in Hindi with the same name. Then Malayalam’s Drishyam 2 came in 2021 and a year later in 2022, Hindi’s Drishyam 2 was released.
Tell your readers some interesting things about the Drishyam franchise of Malayalam. The first film Drishyam, written and directed by Jeetu Joseph and starring Mohanlal in the lead role, was released in 2013. The film became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of that year. After this bumper success, there was a competition to make this film in different languages. While its Hindi remake featured Ajay Devgan in the lead role, its Tamil remake featured Kamal Haasan and the Telugu remake featured Venkatesh in the lead role. Whereas after Malayalam’s Drishyam 2, its Hindi and Telugu remake was made.
Is Drishyam 3 coming?
Yes! In June 2023, there were reports that the Malayalam and Hindi makers of the Drishyam franchise are considering coming together to work on Drishyam 3. According to reports, filmmakers from both languages are planning to write the script for the third film of the franchise together. They are also planning to film the film simultaneously and release it across India on the same date. It is also being told that Telugu Drishyam producers will also be involved in the project and perhaps they will also release Drishyam 3 in their own language on the same date. The story of the third and last installment of the franchise is being kept completely secret and only speculations are being made everywhere as to what its story could be. Preparations are underway to release it in this year 2024, but the date has not been announced yet. It is expected that the film will be released by the end of the year.
Is Drishyam a true story? and What is the inspiration for the Drishyam movie?
A Japanese author ‘Keigo Higashino’ wrote a Japanese novel named ‘The Devotion of Suspect X’. A film named “Suspect X” has been made in Japan based on this novel. On the other hand, a Korean remake of that Japanese film was made called “Perfect Number”. The movie “Suspect X” is a Japanese classic movie that was made according to that era. Whereas the Korean remake “Perfect Number” is many times better than the original Japanese film and is made according to the current scenario. Both these films had the same basis and that was the Japanese novel.
When filmmaker Ekta Kapoor announced making Drishyam in Hindi, her legal team sent a legal notice to Malayalam filmmakers, in which Malayalam director Jeethu Joseph, who made Drishyam for the first time, was accused of using the Japanese film “Suspect Have taken inspiration from the story and made the film Drishyam on it. Jeetu Joseph denied plagiarizing the story and after the legal process commented that the film’s link to the Japanese novel should not be considered unless closely investigated. After this, nothing specific related to the case came out. At the same time, Ekta Kapoor had taken legal action because she had bought the movie rights of the Japanese novel. Whereas, Ekta Kapoor is not the director of the Hindi film Drishyam.
Some others believe that director Jeethu Joseph has taken inspiration for his film from a Japanese novel or film or has seen its Korean remake. Then he adapted that theme to the local environment and wrote a story based on which he made the Malayalam film Drishyam. But until there is no solid evidence, you cannot consider anyone guilty. It is possible that the story of the film is a product of his own brain.
