Successful actor Daniel Levy has made his directorial debut with ‘Good Grief’. Apart from this, he is also the writer and producer of this film. ‘Good Grief’ is a great film that highlights some unseen aspects of the lives of rich and successful people in shiny cities. The story of the film is the product of Daniel Levy’s personal experiences, the screenplay of which he has written very well. All the actors in the film have given a very good performance. Daniel Levy is seen as the main character in the film. Also, the acting of Luke Evans, Ruth Negga, Himesh Patel, Celia Imrie, David Bradley, and Arnaud Valois is commendable. This is an R-rated film and may not be liked much in countries like India (where two people marrying each other is seen as a taboo), but ‘Good Grief’ can be watched once due to its other good aspects. ‘Good Grief’ is currently streaming on Netflix. Let us know some things related to this film and take a look at its review.
What is Good Grief about?
This film is about a person named Mark who is devastated after the death of his husband and in an attempt to forget his memories, he turns away from the important things in life. In such a situation, his two friends try to help him in every possible way. Then Mark comes to know about some surprising things related to himself and his husband. To find out those secrets and for self-discovery, he goes on a journey from London to Paris with his friends. There he and his friends have many types of experiences and also have to face many challenges.
In Good Grief, you get a chance to closely see and understand the bitter-sweet experiences of life such as friendship, personal loss, many disturbances that come with it, and elements like warnings about life, truth, fear, sorrow, depression. This film also makes you understand that if you are in a state of grief or depression, then what effect does it have on the people close to you and how can one get out of that situation? The film teaches us a lot and is also quite entertaining. It must be seen once.
Is Good Grief worth watching?
Absolutely! This is a movie that will teach you a lot. You may not be able to connect with the characters of the film, but the film can give you many lessons. The film shows people’s lives from many angles. One angle is of the main character Mark, who is completely broken after becoming a widower and is unable to come out of his grief. On the other hand, the second angle is seen from the side of his two friends who are trying their best to handle Mark. The third angle is of Mark’s husband Oliver, who was leading a double life. For some people, he was a successful writer, while for others he was something else.
This film can also teach you that if you do something in your life, like being sad or happy, then it has an impact on the people close to you. The plot of the film is quite good and the work of the actors of the film should be appreciated. On the other hand, the role of Mark, who plays the main role, is played by Daniel Levy, who is also the screenwriter and co-producer of this film.
Summary of Good Grief (2023)
Mark (Daniel Levy) is happily married to Oliver (Luke Evans) who is a talented artist and successful writer. While traveling to the airport by cab to attend an event in Paris, Oliver gets into an accident that kills him instantly.
Mark is deeply shocked by this incident and is supported by Thomas (Himesh Patel) and Sophie (Ruth Negga). While both of them had their own problems to deal with, the first anniversary of Oliver’s death approaches. Now Mark finds a letter written by Oliver for him, in which Oliver had made some revelations. After reading the letter, Mark realizes that he needs to know more about himself and Oliver than he knew.
Through this letter, Mark comes to know about some unresolved elements that had strings connected to Paris (where Oliver was going before his death). To find out the truth, Mark decides to go on an extraordinary trip to Paris with his friends Thomas and Sophie. But Mark does not tell his friends that Oliver was leading a double life and he has come to know some shocking things about Oliver.
From here the film takes many turns and we get a chance to see many different experiences of the main characters of the film. Sometimes the story of friendship and love is seen, and sometimes of betrayal and hatred. At some places, they have to face their biggest fears and at other places, shocking secrets come to light.
Is Good Grief a true story?
No! But it is definitely inspired by a personal event. The idea of making this film came to the mind of the main actor, director, co-producer, and screenwriter of the film Daniel Levy when his grandmother passed away. During an interview, he said, “The question was: what does it mean and is there a right way to grieve for someone?” He was thinking of writing a screenplay based on his personal loss which he could present in a different way, but its essence would remain the same. “I had to do it,” Levy adds. “I needed to put a stamp on a script, and it felt very personal to me.”
Is Good Grief a sad movie?
Partially yes! This is a movie in which the main character Mark’s husband dies and he is so immersed in the grief of his death that he even leaves his work. He tries to stay away from everything that reminds him of his husband. While he is immersed in his grief, he also hurts the people around him, which we are discussing below. This must-watch movie tries to explain many deep things to you in a very good manner.
Everyone has a different way of dealing with their sorrows. Some keep themselves very busy to forget their personal sorrow, while others decide to leave all work and live in isolation. There are two aspects of such a situation that need to be paid attention to. The first is that should you really feel so much grief over the death of the person whose death is making you sad you start living completely cut off from worldly affairs. Secondly, what impact will your such behavior have on your loved ones (including your family and friends) living around you? You may love your family and friends, but your being immersed in your own grief also hurts them and they cannot leave everything and sit all the time just to share your grief.
In this film, we are shown that Mark is extremely sad about his personal loss. On the other hand, Sophie and Thomas try to support Mark. They make many sacrifices for their friend and also bear a lot. But it takes a long time for Mark to understand that his friends cannot be with him all the time to share his grief. Rather, they too have their own lives and their own problems. On the other hand, Mark was feeling sad due to Oliver’s departure, while that so-called perfect person was living a double life and somewhere was also deceiving Mark.
